Information

Welcome to Lancaster Castle
With its origins going back to the Roman period, the castle as we see it today dates in part to the middle of the twelfth century, when the great Keep, or Lungess Tower, was erected on the site of an earlier Motte and Bailey castle. In the centuries follwing the Norman Invasion the castle was gradually enlarged, reflecting its importance as a defensive structure and a centre for the administration of justice.

Because of its strategic importance, the castle and surrounding area were entrusted to men close to the throne. It became part of the Honour of Lancaster and the centrepiece of the County Palatine. When the third Duke of Lancaster, Henry Bolingbroke, came to the throne in 1399 as King Henry IV the castle became part of the Duchy of Lancaster.

Today a sizeable proportion of the building is available for the public to view, and tours run daily.
